A Brief History Of Ottawa

Bytown was the original name for Ottawa . Bytown was founded in 1826 as a community .
In 1855 Bytown was renamed Ottawa and incorporated as a city.
Ottawa became Canada's Capital in 1857 .
The origin of the name "Ottawa" is derived from the Algonquin word adawe, meaning "to trade".
The word refers to the Indigenous Peoples who used the river to trade, hunt, fish, camp,
harvest plants, ceremonies, and for other traditional uses.
